How to appeal for salary negotiation

| January 7, 2012 | 0 Comments

Do you have any experience receiving a job offers which is not at your expectation in term of salary, position, grade, perks etc ? In this kind of situation what should you do ? My advise is never accept that kind offer until you get clear explanation or upon discussion with the recruiter.

When determine a new staff salary, you must understand that they will first look at the salary range/ band for the position or grade. The salary range will have a min, average and max figure. Any salary offered will be in that range and normally they will give you salary in that approved range and to ensure that there will be a salary progression if you stuck in the same position for many years.

Let say you are offered a Assistant Manager position with a min RM4,500 Mid RM5,500 and Max of RM6,500. Don’t expect you will get something near to the max figure otherwise another round of salary increment you will be in trouble.

And whatever salary given to you normally has been benchmarked with internal equity. Looking at current economy scenario, the adjustment for new job offer is in the range of 15 – 30% depend on the job, level, industry and also your competencies. For normal job which the recruiter have no difficulties to source a candidate in the market, chances for you to get high salary adjustment is very slim unless you are really underpaid in your current company.

Sample Letter

First of all, I would like to thanks Group A Berhad for the offer of employment extended on 10/6/2010 and look forward to accepting it.

However, as discussed yesterday, I hereby forward my appeal for Group A to review my salary due to the following :

  • If your salary review is just reaching, highlight this in this first point.
  • If your previous co paid good bonus, you can share this to your future employer as well.
  • You can add any other perks that not available in the new co.

I would appreciate if Group A could consider my appeal favourably. Nevertheless, I will  report for duty by mid August 2010 subject to medical clearance.

Again, I wish thank you for this great opportunity and I am confident can make significant contribution to the growth of Group A Bhd over the short and long term.
