Many are not prepared in the negotiations for salary and the perks and end up getting below of their expectation. Negotiations will not be easy unless you have the perfect competency and experience plus the fact that similar combinations is hard to find in the market.
In this post, I listed few tips that you can consider when negotiate on the perks.
When and where to negotiate
It can be during interview or after interview. If after interview, make sure you have the right time and place to talk. Otherwise you will end up with disappointment.
Don’t be the first to talk about money
Don’t worry, it is the interviewer role to ask about salary. If you are the first to ask about money, this will give a bad impression to the interviewer that your main concern is on the money and not on the job.
Understand the job responsibilities and organization structure
Don’t jump to the figure until your understand the responsibilities, organization structure for the job. Ask further questions about the job requirements to gain clarity.
Do your research
Its hard to find the salary range for each position. But certain recruitment agencies like Jobstreets, Kelly Services has published their salary survey online. You might want to subscribe to view it. Ask around, you might meet someone internal who can help you on this.
Get ready with your figure
Get ready with few figures in mind, it could be 20%, 30% or even 50% increase from your current pay. All this is very subjective and hard to determine unless you have done your study above. Pay levels can vary dramatically based on geographic region and available labor pool and the industry. Even though many experts say current pay shouldn’t be used to determine future salary, living in Malaysia this is part of the HR process actually. It will be good if you can ask them the salary range for the job.
Don’t lie on your current salary
Don’t you ever lie on your current salary as this can cause a dismissal in case they find out later on. If they asked about your basic salary, don’t add your travelling claim, commission etc. Many recruiter will ask for copy of payslip during interview.
Got another offer
If you have valid offer from the competitor, try to use it in order to get better deal.
Low offer ?
What if the offer is below your expectation but you really want the job. Don’t turn down, ask for few days to consider and to show your interest. Discuss again and see if they would like to consider some adjustment.
