Graduates of overseas universities fair better than local grads in salary scale

What do you think of this topic, based on my experience yes its true that overseas grads get better pay but only for those with outstanding achievement only, and the different is not that big, just RM200- 300.

A study that we conducted recently revealed that of the 100,000-plus JobStreet.com members in Malaysia who hold a Bachelor degree and are currently working in the country, graduates from overseas universities on average earn about 12 percent more than local graduates.

The salary gap is most apparent among those with up to five years of work experience where overseas graduates are earning a significant 20 percent more than their local counterparts.  Even after 10 years or more of work experience, the gap is still more than 10 percent.

In terms of job specialization, the biggest salary gap between overseas and local graduates is in business-related fields such as management, economics, finance and marketing where overseas graduates earn about 15 percent more than local graduates.

In the engineering and IT/Computer fields, salaries are about 11 percent higher for overseas graduates.

We also did a similar study among 20,000 JobStreet.com members in Singapore and we observed that there is no significant difference between the salaries of graduates from local Singaporean universities and overseas universities even after five or 10 years of work experience.

In conclusion, a Malaysian who graduates from a local Malaysian university earns on average a lower salary than those who graduate from an overseas university. There were no significant difference in salaries that exists among graduates in Singapore.

Note: For this research, the term “overseas” refers to the top three most popular overseas destinations for tertiary studies - Australia, Great Britain and United States - and includes twinning programmes.

UPM survey: English ability important to employers

SEREMBAN: Proficiency in English language was the second most important characteristic sought by potential employers according to a survey done by Universiti Putra Malaysia.

UPM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Nik Mustapha R. Abdullah said prospective bosses always looked for employees with good command of the language as they were an asset to any organisation.

“After critical thinking ability, the next characteristic sought by an employer is whether the prospective employee had a good command of the language.

“With a functional ability of the language, many doors will open once students graduate,” he said at the opening of the seventh Malaysia International Conference on English Language Teaching (MICELT 2008) here on Monday.

Nik Mustapha said this was the finding from a recent survey conducted by UPM’s alumni centre involving more than 4,000 recently graduated students.

He said UPM was also the first university in the country to offer the bachelor in education in the Teaching of English as a Second Language (TESL) programme.

Also present was Higher Education Minister deputy director general (public universities sector) Prof Yusof Kassim who represented minister Datuk Khaled Nordin. He also read Khaled’s speech text.

Khaled said English competency forms an integral element in the success of the ministry’s National Higher Education Action Plan.

“Critical thinking, communication skills, excellent English proficiency and enhanced IT skills must form the common foundation for all graduates regardless of their chosen disciplines.

“These new focuses would be incorporated into a compulsory curriculum which runs concurrently with degree programmes at all higher education institutions,” said Khaled.

MICELT, which was first organised 14 years ago was the country’s premier conference in English language teaching.

The event was organised by UPM’s Educational Studies Faculty.

What next after your graduation ?

graduation_hat.gif

In this post, I would like to give some options or idea what to do next after your graduation. They are many definitions on graduation, but in this post let say graduation means “a day after you have completed your final examinations”.

I believe 2-3 months before your graduation, you have an idea what to do right whether to work, further studies etc. Whatever your plan is, you still need to do something. Based on my experience and observation, I list down some options that you can consider :

1. Certification Letter & Academic transcript

This letter issued by University for you to use when you applying for a job or anything that require your status as graduate. Academic transcript is a summary of your final result.

2. Sponsorship Status

If you were sponsored by any organization, arrange for meeting with them. Ask what you can expect after your graduation. Sponsor very often never promise any job for scholars ! Get release letter if necessary.

3. English Communication

Get your self enroll to any extensive English Course if you think that your communication skill need to be improved. Of course English cannot be improved overnight, but at least this shows that you serious about it and as employer, they tend to like this type of candidates. A course by British Council, of which I think still the best.

4. Further studies

I don’t have any statistic on this option, but many people opt for these in local universities or overseas. You can apply online or offline. But be careful on the accreditation. Check with JPA or LAN first. In case you need sponsorship, visit Malaysia-scholarship.net.

5. Career Fair
